Part of the Apple ecosystem – AirPlay-compatible devices

What is AirPlay?

AirPlay is a wireless technology developed by Apple that allows streaming audio, video, and images between Apple devices. Originally known as AirTunes, the system has since evolved and now enables seamless content sharing between iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPlay-compatible TVs, such as Smart TVs.

Types of AirPlay

AirPlay has two main versions: the original AirPlay and AirPlay 2. AirPlay 2 introduced new features such as multi-room audio streaming and simultaneous control of multiple devices.

With Apple AirPlay 2, you can play music on multiple AirPlay-compatible speakers at once, while your iPhone or iPad displays different content.

How does AirPlay work?

To use AirPlay, devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Apple devices automatically detect AirPlay-compatible TVs and speakers using Bonjour technology.

Bonjour is Apple’s network service discovery protocol, which enables devices to automatically find and communicate with each other on a local network.

To use AirPlay, you need:

  • A source device (e.g., iPhone or iPad running iOS 4.2 or later)

  • A receiving device (AirPlay-compatible device, for AirPlay 2: iOS 11.4 or later)

Users can simply tap the AirPlay button, select the desired device, and instantly enjoy content on a larger screen or with better sound quality.

Setting up AirPlay on iPhone

Setting up AirPlay on an iPhone is simple. Open Settings, find the “AirPlay & Handoff” option, and enable automatic connection if you want your iPhone to suggest nearby devices.

iPhone screen mirroring to TV: How can I connect?

To connect, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as your AirPlay-compatible TV

  2. Open the content you want to stream, then tap the AirPlay button

  3. Select your desired TV or speaker from the list

Why is AirPlay useful?

AirPlay offers many advantages. First, it enables wireless content sharing, so no cables are needed.

Second, users can easily mirror their iPhone or iPad screen to a larger TV, which is ideal for presentations or entertainment.

Additionally, with AirPlay, music and videos can be enjoyed in the best possible quality, providing a premium experience.

AirPlay-compatible TVs: Do you need Apple TV?

Although Apple TV is an ideal device for using AirPlay, it is not required. Many AirPlay-compatible TVs—such as Samsung or LG Smart TVs—support direct streaming, so you don’t need to buy a separate Apple TV.

This means iPhone screen mirroring works on LG TVs as well as on Samsung TVs.

What devices support AirPlay?

Devices that support AirPlay include iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and various AirPlay-compatible speakers like HomePod. Most modern Smart TVs also support AirPlay 2.

  • HomePod and HomePod mini: These smart speakers support AirPlay, allowing you to stream music or podcasts

  • Harman Kardon, Denon, and other audio systems: Many modern audio systems also support AirPlay, enabling wireless music playback

Is AirPlay safe to use in hotels?

Using AirPlay in hotels can be safe, but it’s important to be cautious. Public Wi-Fi networks can be vulnerable, so using a VPN is recommended for better security.

Additionally, avoid sharing sensitive information on public devices.
