In 2020, Apple moved away from Intel-based processors and introduced its own custom-designed chips. This year, the third generation has already been released to the public: M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max.
These industry-leading 3-nanometer processors bring GPU improvements, performance gains, and faster CPU and Neural Engine capabilities. A new graphics technology called Dynamic Caching has been introduced. Additionally, ray tracingis now available, enabling rendering speeds more than twice as fast compared to M1 chips.
The processor speed can exceed the M1 family by up to 30–50%, while the Neural Engine shows up to a 60% improvement. The chip also supports AV1 decoding, improving the quality of media streaming.
M3 GPU Improvements
Dynamic Caching means the system uses exactly as much memory as needed for each task—no more, no less. This prevents unnecessary performance bottlenecks and improves efficiency.
As a result, resources are better utilized, allowing multiple processes to run more effectively at the same time. This leads to a more optimized system that is both faster and more energy-efficient.
Ray Tracing is now hardware-accelerated in the M3 family. It simulates how light interacts with objects, enabling applications to create highly realistic and physically accurate visuals.
Thanks to the new graphics architecture, games and applications deliver more detailed and lifelike visuals. Additionally, improved mesh shading allows for handling more complex scenes in both games and graphics-intensive software.
Overall, the M3 generation can be up to 2.5× faster than M1 models. It has significantly reshaped the market. Moreover, the M3 GPU can deliver similar performance to M1 while using only half the energy. At peak performance, it can outperform its predecessor by up to 65%.
CPU Improvements
The improved performance cores provide up to 30% faster speeds compared to the first generation. This is great news for developers and music producers, as code runs faster in Xcode and more tracks and virtual instruments can be handled in Logic Pro.
The efficiency cores can deliver up to 50% better performance compared to M1, making everyday tasks faster while maintaining excellent battery life.
The new processor can deliver the same performance as M1 using half the energy and can achieve up to 35% higher peak performance.
Unified Memory
Thanks to the unified memory architecture, the system can move and process data quickly, efficiently, and with lower energy consumption. This also enhances the performance benefits of Dynamic Caching and overall system efficiency.
Neural Engine & Media Engine
Machine learning performance has improved significantly with the enhanced Neural Engine—up to 60% faster compared to the M1 family. This enables better performance in AI-powered software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
The advanced media engine provides hardware acceleration for formats like H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW. It also supports AV1 decoding, making streaming more efficient and extending battery life.
Available Configurations
The base M3 chip contains 25 billion transistors (5 billion more than M2) and features up to a 10-core GPU. The CPU has 8 cores (4 performance + 4 efficiency), and memory can go up to 24GB.
For higher performance needs, the M3 Pro offers 37 billion transistors, up to an 18-core GPU, and a 12-core CPU (6 performance + 6 efficiency). Memory can be expanded up to 36GB.
Still not enough? The M3 Max comes with 92 billion transistors, up to a 40-core GPU, and a 16-core CPU (12 performance + 4 efficiency). Memory can go up to 128GB.
